Finish Cutting Boards

Finishing a cutting board not only enhances its appearance but also protects the wood from moisture and prolongs its life. Here's a general guide on how to finish cutting boards:

Sand the Cutting Board: Start by sanding the cutting board to smooth out any rough edges or surfaces. Begin with a coarse-grit sandpaper (around 80-120 grit) to remove any imperfections, and then use a finer-grit sandpaper (around 220-320 grit) to achieve a smooth finish.

Clean the Surface: After sanding, wipe the cutting board with a damp cloth to remove any dust or debris.

Apply the Finish: There are several options for finishing a cutting board, including mineral oil, beeswax, and a combination of both. Here's how to apply each type of finish:

  • Mineral Oil: Apply a generous amount of food-grade mineral oil to the cutting board, spreading it evenly with a clean cloth or paper towel. Allow the oil to soak into the wood for several hours or overnight, then wipe off any excess oil with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Beeswax: To add a protective layer to the cutting board, you can apply melted beeswax after applying mineral oil. Simply melt the beeswax in a double boiler or microwave, then apply it to the cutting board with a clean cloth. Allow the wax to cool and harden, then buff it with a clean, dry cloth to remove any excess.
  • Combination: Some people prefer to mix mineral oil and beeswax for a combination finish. To do this, melt the beeswax in mineral oil, then apply the mixture to the cutting board. Allow it to soak in and harden before buffing off any excess.

Reapply as Needed: Depending on use, you may need to reapply the finish to your cutting board every few months to maintain its appearance and protection.

Allow to Cure: After applying the finish, allow the cutting board to cure for at least 24 hours before using it. This allows the finish to fully penetrate and protect the wood.

Maintain Regularly: To keep your cutting board in good condition, wash it with mild soap and water, and reapply the finish as needed.
