Arctic Hare

The Arctic Hare (Lepus arcticus) is a species of hare that is well adapted to the cold, harsh environments of the Arctic tundra. It is known for its large size relative to other hares, with adults weighing up to 5-7 kg (11-15 lb) and its thick, white fur which provides insulation and camouflage in snowy environments. During summer, their fur can change to a blue-gray to blend in with the surrounding rocks and vegetation.

Classification:

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Chordata
  • Class: Mammalia
  • Order: Lagomorpha

The Arctic Hare is known for its ability to survive in extreme cold temperatures and has several adaptations for life in the Arctic, including large hind feet that function like snowshoes to prevent sinking into the snow, and a diet that varies seasonally from woody plants and mosses in winter to berries, leaves, and flowers in summer.
